M & O Railroad Depot

This depot was believed to have been started by the M & O Railroad in 1860, but was interrupted by the Civil War; the project was not resumed until 1867. With it's completion, the first train ran carrying passengers from Aberdeen, Mississippi on December 2, 1869. The M & O Railroad played a major role in Aberden's early development connecting Aberdeen to the rest of the world. The railway continued its success until the mid 1920's when the St. Louis - San Fransicso (Frisco) Railroad ran a new line through Aberdeen offering faster service and new equipment, which ended the passenger service. The track was abandoned in 1948.

After years of neglect, we are now trying to save and restore this historic building. Even though the property is owned by the city, the restoration is taking place at no cost to the city due to donations and grants. According to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, this is the oldest standing depot in the state.
